If you didn't pack Defog on one of your mons (which, if you weren't bent on catching them all, was easy to miss) you were pretty much boned. 90% of your attacks wouldn't connect, you couldn't see five feet ahead of you, and the wild encounters were the same Pokemon you found earlier. It doesn't help that in Gen IV Defog was an awful move on its own.
