A counter=/=check. What you are describing are checks (and also really, really shitty examples of them.)
A counter needs to be able to come in, take ANY hit the Pokemon can realistically deal, and threaten to kill back either by tanking the next move, or outspeeding and KOing.
A check is something that can come in safely (ie; after another member has died, through means of turning, etc.. basically any manuever that doesn't risk taking a hit) and can then threaten to kill.
M-Gengar cannot switch in on Greninja, as it risks being OHKOed by Dark Pulse.
Also it's banned.
Also there are tons of better checks than sacrifcing your Mega like that.
