Hey /vp/ how does one get into the metagame?

I don't want to get super tryhard or anything, but I'd like to be able to build a viable team but still be creative.

My irl friends all got decently good and my shitty slapped together main story teams can't cut it anymore.
Plus I kinda just exploit weaknesses and spam attacks so I'd like to actually learn the more complex play styles.

Anyway I had the idea of making a sort of /m/ style team, kinda g gundam/super sentai.

So definitely a fighting type focus, though I'd really like to use Mega Scizor.

Anyway, what would you guys recommend to get into the meta and understand team building?
Are there perhaps any resources I can use you'd recommend?
