New Types

ITT: We list commonly suggested new elemental types, then give reasons why they're unnecessary or already covered by an existing type. I'll start:

Magic-type: 95% of this is already covered by the Fairy-type, the remaining 5% would fall under Psychic-type domain

Seriously, Cosmic-type pisses me off.

What are its weaknesses? What are its strengths? There are no logical ones, because you created a type based on a group of pokemon and not a distinctive element.

Not to be contrarian, but.... that's exactly what half the types are -- Bug, Dragon, Ghost, Psychic, Fighting, Fairy, none of those are elements.

You mean just like Ghost, Bug, Dragon and Fairy?
Pokemon types aren't always based on distinctive elements, mate. They're more like a taxonomic classification than anything.

New types, eh. What really irritates my autism is some of the English names of types. Like, ok. We have Fire, and we have Water. Then instead of Air and Earth to complete the four elements, they give us Flying and Ground. Which, for all intents and purposes, *are* just Air and Earth. Also, Grass should be Plant or Wood, Steel should be Metal, Dark should be called Darkness and be based on darkness to begin with instead of muh dirty fighting, and I prefer Lightning to Electric. Being autistic is suffering.

Pretty sure the intention was to point out cosmic tends to be created around retconning a bunch of older mons, rather than trying to build an "element," traditional or otherwise, from the ground up.

Personally, it's similar to why I get tired of "Sound" type. Right now, it's an under developed but interesting mechanic of the battle system. Not a type, no matchups of strength or weakness, but there are moves and abilities that revolve around it. With some more focus, it could be come a more in-depth and viable part of the overall system.

But no. Just slap a type on to it, and make it work exactly like all the other types due. No mechanical growth or diversity. Just "strong against this, weak against this."

Pokemon has so many types now, this kind of work should focus on rebalancing the type chart, not crowding it with more types. Especially pointless ones.

I actually think we could reduce the type chart:
Grass and Bug into Grass-type
Ground and Rock into Earth-type
Psychic and Fairy into Magic-type

Oh, don't get me wrong. I actually agree that new types aren't needed right now, I was just pointing out what criteria GF seems to follow when creating a new type.

On the same note, I see Fairy as one of the few things that could have worked as a new type. It followed the classification patterns from old types (like dragon, ghost or flying), and only type it removed from some pokemon was normal, therefore not affecting negatively their STAB moves.

Cosmic, for example, would have retconned either Psychic or Rock from Solrock/Lunatone. The same for Jirachi or Starmie.

They're pointing out another reason retconning types at this juncture would suck.

Most Fairy-types retconned either just got a second type where they were originally one type, or their normal typing got changed.

Losing Normal is not really that much of a fuck up. Normal's practically a neutral typing anyway.

But for things like Cosmic and what would change, Solrock, Lunatone, Jirachi, and Starmie for example, they'd have to have a primary type changed. Psychic in this case.

And that would really fuck up their move sets and stabs. Literally the only pokemon whose types were retconned before XY were Magnemite and Magneton. And they only got another typing, no actual change.

This is all on top of the cluster fuck cosmic typing would have to deal with with matchups.

It would be cool but there's no real justification for it. What would be the typing strengths, weaknesses, and immunities? If anything I think it would be interesting to introduce it as a new category of move type, like physical and special, but even that's a stretch.

Hell, Soundproof is a reason to not make it a type, as it would become super redundant.

Sound should remain a weird kind of sub mechanic, something that adds some diverse flavor to the system. Not just another type with the same standard mechanics.

I'll admit. Most "Sound" pokemon are Normal, and so them being retconned would be like Fairy type retconning and wouldn't really fuck them over as much as others. But it's still an uncreative way to think about it.

"Oh, we've got this prevalent theme. Better make it a type. Screw interesting mechanics."

It's one of the reasons Cosmic sucks as a type idea, as we've been discussing. No creativity. Just seeing a theme in a few pokemon and going "herp derp, better make it a type."

Flying -> Wind
Ground -> Earth, but I don't think it's too limited. It's more concerned with ground dwelling animals more than ground itself.
Steel -> Metal

Dark covers evil and malicious, but you don't see it too much in a children's rpg game, not just dirty fighting, and electric is broader than lightning.

I just don't understand what Satoshi and Sugi had in mind with bird -> flying. Why wouldn't you think of wind type first? FUCK BIRDS. I guess they didn't expect Pokemon to expand into these abstract ideas though.

The Fighting-type is called "Combat" type in French. I like that, it's more descriptive. All Pokémon can fight, but engaging in combat is almost more.. martial arts based, which is what Fighting is.

The French also call the Grass-type Plant-type, and the Spanish call Ground-type the Earth-type. At least some languages got things right.

If you're going to go full TCG, do it right.

Normal and Flying become colorless, so do some Poison
Grass and Bug become Grass, so do some Poison
Ghost and Psychic become Psychic, so do some Poison
Fighting, Ground and Rock become Fighting

The type chart is now Colorless, Grass, Water, Fire, Lightning, Fighting, Psychic, Dragon, Dark, Metal, Fairy

Sound should be the last type they add. Lots of good candidates. Exploud, Wigglytuff (sound/fairy), Kricketune, Noivern, Politoed, Audino possibly Pidgeot. And most of them are normal type anyways, or are monotype (those that aren't have typings they don't benefit much from anyways, like Noivern who would be better off with STAB boomburst than STAB draco meteor).

Sound waves are the easiest thing to actually classify with that since they're observable in nature, mythology, and more

The whole thing about people wanting it is that it's clearly elemental. You can't call Meloetta as normal as Rattata. Exploud clearly has something going on making it different from Ursaring. Lore-wise, that's much more reason to make something a typing than to keep it a mechanic for no reason when we already have a bunch of other mechanics, sound doing absolutely nothing and all the would-be sound type Pokemon suffering from not being able to stand out amongst the other normal types
