Even if the opinions were of the worst reasoning imaginable, it's still a community based decision. Those people have every right to vote and have influence on the outcome if they put thought and effort into explaining why they wanted to vote a particular way.
The moderators had no right to skew the voting to get the result they wanted just because they weren't going to get it.
