The only wasted slot is Salamence, which by no means needed a mega.
Audino and Steelix needed better abilities and Glalie's stats were poorly allocated, but they both needed boosts.
Everything else is pretty good.

Steelix lives in a time that weather is no longer viable in singles, or is less braindead at least, so it needs to waste a slot setting a Sandstorm or needs to be in doubles. Diancie's regular stat distribution is mostly defensive, while its Mega allows it to be offensive. I personally would like to see more megas like Pidgeot and Beedrill's just because they give a slight boost to Pokemon who are considered too weak to gain a team slot. Like Gyarados last time Sharpedo and Camerupt are story based Megas, and like Gyarados again they are pretty decent. That leaves Audino, which is strictly a doubles based support Mega with an okay but could definitely be better ability that most people aren't going to use simply because of the more powerful, much better win button Megas.

A fair amount of the megas would've been better off as straight up evolutions with some adjustments to compensate for the fact that they are permanent changes rather than solely combat centric (with speed/priority abilities not kicking in right away).

I absolutely love Diancies mega design but the fact that its a mega and a legendary at that, the odds of seeing it anywhere but free battle are practically zero which just makes it a waste. Same goes Primordial Groudon/Kyrogre and Mega Rayquaza, like what's the point? They aren't going to have any use. Not even as "status symbols" since you are limited to one anyway. Tpggleable Formes is a better concept in that regard.

Audino needs a better supporter ability if you're going to be a VGC gimmick.

Meanwhile Fat bird needs a better movepool.

The rest is fine for me, I don't like the idea of every mega being OU tier. Beedrill already got an awesome treatement, yes it's shit, but keep in mind it's a fucking early route bee.

-Mega sharpedo is no better than normal sharpedo with life orb

Mega Sharpedo is boring, but I like the duality of Speed Boost and Strong Jaws, so it gets a pass. Basically, duality is what wins me over when it comes to megas. Funnily enough, both Mega Mawile and Mega Sableye are the ones that showcase this perfectly. It doesn't always work out however; it seems some megas get boring stuff like Adaptability just to squeeze in power that would've been supplemented by any other held item. In that case it just becomes a little boring, and often times not enough.

Lord have mercy on you if the mega ability is pointless. Mega Sceptile and Mega Audino? Tragic (Especially when the latter is one of the better looking megas.). Yeah, let's just say "It's suitable for doubles!", because we ALL know doubles has been an active hotspot for battling these last few gens...

I can't really justify any megas on there that won't be of much use competitively, because it only highlights the failure of it being a mega. I personally want megas to be a second chance for viability, not just a hamfisted gimmick.

But then again, we got stupid shit like Mega Gengar last gen. So I guess this little spiel of mine is all for naught.

Should explain the half lines: Mega Sableye could have easily been its own normal evolution or maybe even a split evolution where normal sableye is the naturally faster and the mega being more of a tank, give normal sableye a buff in stats and it could easily work which is why i'm only half against.
Mega Steelix stats should have been normal steelix's stats originally, maybe not to every detail but close enough where its usable, if you look at regular steelix stats which are a mess, 85 attack and 65 special defense are pretty pathetic for a giant metal snake and when it mega evolves, 125 is good but not great thanks to the power creep and 95 special defense is generally better but it still would have been better and fitting if those were the natural stats.

i don't know about singles, but lightningrod pokemon are both rare and valuable in doubles. And since LR zapdos got canned in XY, mega sceptile will be the next best thing if you want to protect your sweeper's ass from prankster thunder waves

The only answers for megas that are not worth the slot in any format are Pidgeot, Latios, and Audino. Even shaky stuff like Steelix and Beedrill can pull their own weight in certain situations while hogging your mega slot.

The only other special fairies that don't get Moonblast are Wigglytuff (terrible) and Togekiss (doesn't even run fairy STAB most of the time because >no moonblast). Sylveon obviously isn't meant to be used offensively either and it has 30 more special attack and an ability that is incredibly useful, unlike Audino.

There is no way to justify using your ONE mega on a wish passer, especially with Chansey, Clefable, and Sylveon being more viable options that also get Wish+Heal Bell.

tacked on cross-gen evolutions are the problem.

do you know why chansey and dusclops are better than their evolutions? because, in their respective gens, they were both designed as fully evolved Pokemon, with the stats to reflect that. a simple buff was all it took.

Mate, Mega Gallade is A+ rank even with Megamence everywhere and is essentially better than M-cham in any aspect except initial damage
Sableye is the face of ORAS stall, almost like 2 pokemon in one and really hard to deal with once it gets CM
Mega Lopunny is not meant to be used like M-Cham, it hits fast with okay damage, unresisted coverage and can be used as a fast healing wish and other support
Mega Camerupt hits like a truck, albeit needing a lot of support, also 2 weakness is not too many
