So are there any fps drops in this game like in X/Y?
Do online matches STILL take place in a boring blue background that's unchangeable?

Yes and yes.

Even worse is the lack of customization, which I don't mind for the main game, but now makes online battles look retarded with multibattles typically being "trainer brendan and trainer may challenged traner brendan and trainer brendan" avatars

Yes, tons. Even in single battles and 3D off there are framerate drops sometimes. In the fucking beginning cutscene of the game it dropped frames with 3D on.

There's actually no reason at all to get these games unless you really want to experience the R/S Hoenn maingame in 3D with modern mechanics, or if you want to use one of the new megas.

Depends, the main game is basically gen3 but shorter and as easy. "Post-game" is basically X/Y.

Well GameFreak is slowly turning into CoD.
CoD:

At least Call of Duty has difficulty settings for the campaign.

But yes, GF reached that some point where they don't need to do anything of note to sell the games, they just sell themselves regardless so they do the bare minimum.
The only thing that might make them try harder is if sales start dropping in Japan.

And unlike the west, in Japan kids are indeed the bulk of the audience for Pokemon still. Kids aren't going to even know what the BF was.
Plus GF keeps saying how they need to compete with instant-gratification smartphone games, and that route doesn't exactly end in meaty and expansive games.
