The thing is you don't even need to, you could breeze through gyms in xy with wild caught pokemon, I didn't even train them

No, they even teleport you around so you don't get lost when you have to backtrack. Like going from Meteor Falls to Mauville, Lavridge to Petalberg and Petalberg to Mauville.
