There's a lot of Japanese phrases and other things thrown in the game, like all of the French references in Kalos. I was surprised to see Japanese in the Poke Mart, I can't think of any other time when they did something like that despite these being Japanese games. It really helps with the immersion.

Hoenn is notably designed after a rural part of Japan, away from the city.

It's always given off that sort of feeling. Meanwhile either Kanto or Johto is more the Tokyo area near the big cities.
