Hugh was shit, OP.

Barry was good though, probably the best rival. He was your friend, but he was also very competitive and intent on beating the MC. He wasn't a complete ass like Blue or Silver/??? and wasn't bland like the XY, Oras, or RSE rivals.

But BW's rivals were far better than Hugh character-wise, OP. Bianca was a friendly klutz who accepted her fate as a weakling after you beat her enough and Cheren was a serious guy who decided to train instead of lament his defeat after every time you beat him. His constant training even paid off and it got him the position of gym leader.

Hugh had a more entertaining personality. Even though he's one-note most of the time, B/W rivals are pretty much the same in that area but Hugh wins out for being more interesting and making me care which is more than I can say for Cheren and Bianca.

You know the battle you have over the mega stone at the tower of mastery with serena? I lost on purpose, it was actually harder not to kill her than it was to just sweep her. Anyways I blacked then come back to the tower, and serena was still there, waiting for our match to decide who gets the mega stone

I know exactly where you're coming from. The reason you like him despite his personality is because he was motivation.

He was always one step ahead of you and taunting you all the way, making you push forward to beat all the gyms and the elite four and making it all the more satisfying when you dethroned him of the champion status he got just a few minutes before you.

It's a shame Pokemon writers just don't seem to get that anymore, what makes a rival. A rival is competitive towards you and will race you to the top. That was completely thrown out by the time X/Y came out.

I actually consider Maxie/Archie to be more of a rival this game. They may be the antagonists, but they believe in their cause and respect you. After you defeat them they change their ways, and are friendly enough with you to team up with you at the Battle Resort.
It's kind of like N, if N had an incredibly stupid plan that would never work

Contests online would have been shit. Megas have obvious advantages limiting the contests to around 40 mons, using a certain mon almost always guarantees the same results, Smeargle is a thing, and other shit.

Honestly, rival fights since the beginning should have been regardless of a win or loss you continue. Just beating them let's you feel good you did, and losing would hopefully encourage you to use a status move.

He has the instinct of wanting to prove that he is better than you, but more than that, what he relishes more is the battle itself. He is hotblooded that he sports sideburns even if he's only a teenager. He'd be super cliche but the fact that he wants to fight at his best and wants to beat me up because he sees me as a challenge should make me have manly tears.

Silver wasn't really a rival. He was more like an actual enemy, until you win him over with the power of friendship.

Blue and Barry have been the only good rivals. All of X/Y and Wally are the worst.

I liked how Barry was just a silly kid and grew to be pretty nice character, currently playing Platinum just for that. I liked Silver because he felt like he wants to be as bad and bad as his dad and be able to beat him, but, he kinda realizes he won't be able to do that without caring about his Pokemon which is kinda was the whole of GSC. I never got to play RSE or ORAS so I can't really tell about that, but, BW's rivals felt like actual character than just NPCs. Cheren being the serious competent one and Bianca being a dork, it's cute. Hugh's backstory was a little lame, but, I kinda wonder how Hugh's grandfather was like to him to care so much about that Purrloin, it gives a little mystery to him.

XY rivals were so bad, but, maybe Z will fix that with Kalos-themed contests so you can actually dance-off against Tierno and have an actual Pokedex challenge against Orangekid.
Shauna should just have a little backstory and some extra dialogue and just one cutscene to justify her existence. Serena/Calem just need a few more rival battles, more dialogue and a little bit of confidence to actually fix them.

It was difficult to give a shit about his pokemon and even less about your battles since your never in any sort of rivalry.

Gary I wanted to beat because he was a dick. Silver was a dick and screwed the player over. Cheren and Barry where friends but they still actively wanted to kick your ass so it was relishing to beat them. Hugh was indifference. A chore. Which is much worse because it never evoked anything.

Hugh greatest weakness though was his team. Seriously they should never have give him a monkey. It was okay when Cheren and Bianca had them because it reflected the player getting one. With Hugh is was just a shit mon on an already small team

Haven't played X &Y but they sound embaressing

In R/B/Y you could one or two other battles to him also. I believe post Mt.Moon you had to win them all though.

Interestingly, the eevee evolution that your rival took in Yellow was determined by how many times you had lost to him.
