In gen IV you were left with 1HP instead of fainting.
In gen V they just dropped the mechanics outside of battles completely.

XY was piss poor easy so getting poisoned was an insult, I actually thought it still affected pokemon outside of battle

Being poisoned was already bad enough that it increases damage each turn. Don't assume anything being gone automatically means it's "casual", it was the worst shit to implement.

I guess, but again, I liked the little challenge between finding how to get to town fast enough to heal them without dying, but still being able to use them if you couldn't get to a town. I didn't want my hand to be held.
