I don't know if this is commonly known, but Sharpedo should be your hm slave for surf/dive/waterfall/strength. Skarmory can learn fly, cut, flash, and rock smash, so if you get these two you'll be set, but I digress.
When you surf with Sharpedo, it shows you riding a sharpedo. Not a blue circle. Also, sharpedo swims much faster than other pokemon. I figured this out completely by accident, I don't know if this was true in XY or if it's true for any other pokemon.
You can catch a carvanah in the little water crossing by where you and Steven meet latias/latios. Same place you get the good rod. Fish there with a good rod and you can find a carvanah.
