About five to six hours in Zeta and on the way to the third gym.
The game is padded to hell and back and a lot of trainers are just copypasted over the map which makes going from town to town pretty tiring.

Disappeared for a bit, back.

To progress in the game you need to talk to some guy named Carl that acts as a Bill substitute; not sure what disorder he has but one is definitely there. He has good taste in vidya at least.

After talking to him we can go forward, getting to our rival battle. Our rival drops some not-so-subtle hints that he admires Team Quarry, tells me to fuck off, and battles me.

His team consists of Gastly (small world), Poliwag, Onix, and Exeggcute.

He seems to have some mental instability, because when I beat him he talks about how he feels a breakdown and says he's going to find "some cool Team Quarry members to hang out with." I guess he's on their side now.

It's incredibly cringeworthy but kinda amusing at the same time. I can't tell if the game wants me to take it seriously or not.

Hmm, there's another new Pokéball besides the Shiny Ball; the DV Ball changes a caught Pokémon's stats to maximum for its species (since DVs are Gen I/II IVs). Would've been nicer to be able to change my already caught Pokémon's stats but it's certainly a nice feature. Shame I haven't seen any wilds that caught my eye enough to use either of the new balls yet.

There isn't a nicknamed Charizard in the Pokémon movie to my knowledge so I can't steal an uncreative nickname from it like I always do for the other two starters; what's a good, lame, uncreative name for a Charizard, namely a shiny one?

Well, we got to Copper Town -- "Worth more than a penny!" -- and they seem to have a huge feud with the neighboring city, Pyrite Town.

At one point I find a sign saying "DO NOT WALK ON THE RECTANGULAR PATH" and someone walking on it.

This normally wouldn't be worth mentioning.

I talk to the guy on the path, and he talks about how rebellious he is, and then --
>... I feel strange all of a sudden. There's a voice inside my head! ... AAACK! Make it stop! ... BROOMMM! HAHAHAHAHA!

And I find myself in the same dreamlike-area as the intro, the voice shouts at me not to walk on the rectangular path, and then we battle, only I have my normal team instead of a buffed up team of Lv. 100s.

??? uses Flaaffy/Haunter Fearow and he actually kicks the ass of half my team, I barely beat him. I return to town, the rebel thanks me for clearing out the voice, and he gives me a key item that, when put in the front slot, raises the special defense of your whole team. These "equippable" key items are a nice touch, though I've just been sticking with the one that raises wild encounter levels so far.

Was "the rectangular path" a metaphor for something not yet revealed, or is the ominous voice just a stickler for following rules and me walking there upset it?

Seems to be shaping up to be another Pokémon Brown with more custom music, though it's only a four-Gym beta.

Oh, and one thing I should mention; in addition to the 18 types, phys/spec split, etc., it also includes the neat little additions from Gen VI, like Poison/Electric/Fire-types not being able to be burned, Grass-types being immune to Leech Seed/powders, all that good stuff.

I actually never played Colosseum other than once at a friend's house so I wouldn't know their similarities. All the towns in Maize are named after minerals and metals, though, so it might be coincidental. If the Smash U GC controller adapter works for hacked Wii I'll be able to play Colosseum/XD on that at least.

The gate to Pyrite Town is blocked off by guards refusing to let someone from the other city in, so I need to take a secret tunnel to get there. There's also a Gym, but it requires a secret door; to be let through I need to find the HM for Fly so the person with the key can get to Pyrite.

Found a Drilbur and caught it with the DV Ball; notably if you have a Pokémon with maxed DVs the status screen displays "PERFECT" in the top-left corner.

It takes longer to get between Gyms than in the original games, but it doesn't feel like padding at all because the sidequests are all different enough and feature distinct (if one-note) NPCs.

Reading about the sidequests are half of what made me want to play this game.

A week or two ago there was someone in here who was talking about making a hack that was focused around sidequests and small interactions with people in each city rather than the typical Badge-collecting game. I hope that comes to fruition, it has tons of potential.

Had to go through a long cave filled with Quarry grunts; at the end was a man named Jet who asked what the world was coming to, talking about how this was one of the only unmined mountains left and Team Quarry destroyed it. He gives you fly afterward, which is the only way to get to Pyrite.

The Copper Gym is Fire-type and has a sea of lava; I got a meta warning from the Gym assistant not to save and quit on the raised platforms or I'll get stuck.

Elda, the Gym Leader, comes at me with Houndour/Ponyta/Charmeleon.

Does Erika have a crystal ball in Gen I? I never noticed it and can't see what else that could be in her sprite.

I get the Dinabadge (the Gym Leader, a sister of those kids in that one building playing all those ROMhacks, tells me it's named after Din from Zelda) and Fire Blast and continue on. I'll stop for the night; we're three badges through the four-Gym beta.

Is there a way to have Desmume constantly run at 100% while emulating? The only reason I don't play DS hacks is because the lag is so frustrating.

Close more programs when playing. Get a better computer. Fuck around with your performance settings. Play around with the dynamic compiler or whatever it's called. If all else fails, use no$gba. It was even updated recently so that you're not stuck with no$zoomer all the time.

I'm working on another FR difficulty hack, should be ready for Wednesday-ish if all goes well. It's a difficulty hack adds Fairy type and move updates, new abilities and items, the gen 4 cross gen evolutions and Sylveon. Trainers (should) have somewhat slightly better AI and more dangerous teams. Wild encounters are mostly Kanto and Johto pokes in Kanto with a few Hoenn pokemon and some gen 4 babies available earlier in the game. Trying to really up the ante with the difficulty as well.
I'm aiming to make something like Fire Red Evolution, but not broken.
Anyone interested in playing it when I finish it (if it works)?

Back to Zeta. I hope you don't mind me continuing to write about it.
Beat the third gym and of course the gimmick was a sandstorm inside the building. The gym was standard rock type stuff so it wasn't exactly challenging for my Seadra. After that I somehow get to use Cut outside of battle. I had no Pokémon that could learn Cut, but I found another HM replacement item almost immediately which is a cool idea I guess.

And after purchasing a mart upgrade I finally get to buy revives. Then I backtracked two towns to get to the fourth gym which is blocked by a tree.

Still trying to say some nice things about the game, but it's not easy. It's nice that you can see EVs and IVs, but I feel like it doesn't really matter if you have to go through 80 hours of story content first before you can think of other stuff. The sprite artwork is not very good in general.

The fourth gym leader was a robot from Orre which used steel type Pokémon. There wasn't a single other trainer in the gym so that one ended up being pretty shortlived.

I was a bit lost and didn't know where to go next, so I looked it up. Turns out I had to go back to the city with the third gym again.
Back there I entered another maze like cave with way too many ladders. Got out at another town which turned out to be a dead end and I had to look up again to find the right exit.

>Route 309 can prove to be an extremely confusing network of ladders even after having navigated the cave once before.

Inside the cave you can do the mining minigame for Super Potions, which was probably the most addictive thing in the game yet.

The fifth gym is a ghost type gym. The other trainers were almost invisible and while the design wasn't good, it was probably the best gym so far. There was a lot of Confuse Ray spam going on though but I like that the gym leaders use stuff like Full Heal too. Now I can use Fly and Surf.

There wasn't much going on between the gyms. I also joined the Ranger Club and did the first side mission of it which was just fighting a bunch of strong members of the evil team.

These posts are getting to long. Sorry about that.

Instead of proceeding with the plot I joined the Police Club. Like the Ranger Club you can do side missions there. But you just fight a bunch of Asgard and Rocket grunts, so it's nothing special.
In the second mission you battle a bunch of grunts with self destruct spamming Weezings, who are raiding Oaks lab in Pallet Town.
Entering said lab, Team Rocket stole some kind of machine and for some reason Oak decided to wreck my shit.

However, these battles are a pretty good source of exp. I hope I never get to the point where I have to grind much in the wild, because it's just tedious as fuck.

Back to the main game. After a pretty straight-forward water route and thousands of Wingull and Tentacool later I arrived at the next town and got an HM item for surf.
Team Asgard revived some legendary Fakemon called Divaevus and I got to fight them with an E4 member at my side. Of course my partner died almost instantly so I had to fight the double battle alone which was... something.

And they're building up some Miror B. hype here.

Thanks. It's definitely interesting to discover a fanmade region, since I'm usually not playing much fanmade stuff, but the game is just riddled with design flaws. Like caves are either just one corridor or a giant confusing maze. But I'm surprised there seems to be so much content.

My Kingdra got surf too. You needed to teach a Pokémon the HM first to get over the sea and after that you got the Lapras.

To get to Pyrite City you have to use Fly; you were able to enter the outskirts earlier but it was barred by a fence so you couldn't enter it outright. I think it's neat to make Fly more than just a convenience tool this way, though I had to catch a shitmon to teach it to.

The fourth Gym requires you have certain types in your party to continue through it. Coincidentally I had all of them (Normal, Flying, Ground, Poison) when I walked in so it wasn't an issue at all.

Stella, the Steel-type Gym Leader (I don't know why Ground was required; the other three make sense since Steel resists them, I would've figured that was the requirement), uses Magnemite/Steelix/Excadrill/Scizor. Beating her nets me the Steelbadge.

And, after that, the only path I can see going forward is deliberately blocked off, so I suppose that's the end of the beta.

It's a great hack so far, honestly. All the little gameplay tweaks to update it to Gen VI standards are lovely, the region is nice, there might be a few surreal sections but nothing that I would call bad, and the sidequests are a great touch; it's really well-put-together and I hope it gets finished.

After a battle against the rival I finally arrived at the city with the sixth gym. There's a Game Corner here too. You can play on the slot machines or a Pokémon version of Triple Triad from FF8, which is pretty damn neat.

The gym is bug type. To proceed in the gym you have to solve various tile puzzles. The leader has six Pokémon, including a Volcarona and a mega-evolved Scizor. Nice surprise, overall an alright gym.

Outside the gym I get kidnapped by Team Asgard and the ghost gym leader comes to my rescue. After listening to Ash Ketchups sad life story and clearing their base I find out that revolting Team Asgard members want to fuse Sableye and Shedninja to create a Sableye with Wonder Guard or some shit like that. A battle against the admin follows and she sends out level 47 Mienfoo/Medicham/Lucario which is quite a spike.

An E4 member shuts down the fusion machine and the ghost gym leader lets us escape.
After finding a masterball I exit the base. Outside I catch a grass type Snorlax in a small hut and then head back to the last town.

Hmm, not sure what to make of it so far.

I and my sister (who I suppose are Jessie and James despite not looking like such) are joining Team Rocket. The Rocket hideout here is in the middle of the forest to hide from the police (even though it seems everyone in the adjacent town knows exactly where it is and one NPC says said town has the largest police force and they're always searching for Team Rocket).

My starter choices are Ekans/Koffing/Meowth, I went with the snek because wrap spam, rival went with Koffing, I spammed wrap and Koffing didn't get a single turn.

The tiles are different, to say the least. I've seen better, but I've seen worse too.

The region is a bit odd, too. Seems I'll be travelling underground or being warped from place to place, mission-style.

Because from my point of view the level curve is a straight line upward, regardless of starter.

There actually was an exit it just wasn't marked, my fault for not checking that square.

My rival fought me with four Pokémon, mostly Poison-types, her Koffing at Lv. 18.

The Gym that follows has Gym trainers with Pokémon at 20-21. After that I grinded slightly off trainers on the next route with slightly lower levels than that.

The leader, a Water-type leader named Sandy, has a Vaporeon at Lv. 24 and a Lapras at LEVEL THIRTY-TWO. Only beat it through RNG abuse.

I reiterate, am I missing something? Did I, without trying, skip a good chunk of the game to end up against something at Lv. 32?

I battle like forty trainers, like literally around forty, as I go across what seems to be the equivalents of Lavender, Saffron, and Vermillion. I go through the S. S. Anne (by flashing a weapon at the guard instead of having a ticket), fight my rival, and this is where the curve confuses me the most.

Some of the trainers in the S. S. Anne have Pokémon up to Lv. 39. Your rival's highest is at Lv. 34.

Same with the Gym Leader; you fight Sgt. Bolt (good name), and of his Electrode/Magneton/Raichu, his highest is Lv. 38. Compare this to the Lv. 32 Pokémon in the first Gym, it really confuses me.

I haven't been updating because there's really no plot to speak of or any interesting events to talk about. It's just, alright. I decided to just funnel all of my experience to Snek and it's now at Lv. 51, two badges in.

I'll stop for the night. The hack is just mediocre, there's not really anything wrong with it besides the brutal opening level curve, but there isn't really anything to speak about. I can see why the hacker wanted to remake it and make it great, at least the remake is looking well so far.

I know you can already do fairy, PSS, and new evolutions as well as movesets. Only thing you can't do is mega evos, though you could theoretically make them enemy only mons which wouldn't really change anything.

Another long update. I spent about 16 hours with Zeta now.

Did the third Police Club mission. After chasing them out of Pallet Town in the second mission, I have to stop Team Rocket from catching Mew and end up fighting Giovanni himself. They still get Mew's DNA and in the fourth mission I get to their base. After fighting some grunts, Giovanni battles me again but this time he only has a Mewtwo at level 45. After that, Mewtwo kills Giovanni (and all the other grunts) and I escape.

I also discovered a Trainer who helps you train. You pay him and he sends out six Audino.

Following the main game again, I enter Mt. Press to track Team Asgard down. After a long climb Asgard challenges me to a double battle with my rival as my partner. They attack with seven Pokémon, but this battle went better than the last double. On top I fight the Asgard boss himself who is about to awake Jirachi. Surprising level spike here, he also has a lvl 58 moxie Salamence.

Jirachi appears and I catch it. Just when an angered Odin whips out his gun and is ready blow his load into me, Arceus stops him. It turns out that Odin is actually Gold. What a twist! Odin runs away, and Arceus turns out to be the Zoroark of an E4 member.

My next destination is the seventh gym.

Koga's Gym is some strange combination of Psychic, Ground, and Poison. Koga himself (they didn't change his name even though they changed the names of the other leaders so far) has Nidoqueen/Hypno/Golem/Gengar, not really any theme I guess.

Snek is at Lv. 56, going through the Game Corner Police Hideout now and one Police grunt sent pic related out. Spooky.

Well, I just started playing Zeta and have made it through the second gym. Seems quite fun and feels like a pokemon game even though it isn't actually a rom hack. Some thoughts, anyway:

The game seems to be full of meme shouting and also has its fair share of DARKNESS. Doesn't bother me that much really, so not big deal, but I wonder if it keeps getting worse.

Also, for a game that is supposed to be challengin for a pokemon game, it surely does hand you some gamebreakers early on. I caught a starly early and it wrecked just about anything that I came against, but the Rotom you can get before the second gym is just ridiculous. I know, I don't really have to use these, but will the game get harder later on? Doesn't have to be Emerald386-hard, but it could be a bit more difficult

We go through the Pokémon Tower, it's unchanged and the rival battle is like 20 levels lower than current trainers, I guess we were meant to look for her earlier even though we couldn't get to the top of the tower so there was no reason to go in.

The fourth Gym is Flora, she has Victreebel/Exeggutor/Vileplume, Wrap and Acid clean house. Snek is Lv. 66 and I have 5 Rare Candies stashed away.

After getting to use rock smash outside of battle, I return to Mt. Press to get the replacement item for it. On the way I also found my first megastone, a Banettite.

The eigth gym lies in a city you can only navigate through with surf. Ironically the gym is fire-type.
As I am about to challenge the leader, my rival steps in. It's another double battle gym, but this time with my rival (who has now a Victini) as my partner. He dies on me again, which makes things quite fun. Could've been a decent gym, but that double battle really ruined it.

Next step is Victory Road I guess, hope my shitmons will make it through.

Of course I can't speak for the end game, but the only real difficulty I've faced until now is running out of PP because the game just keeps throwing trainers at you. However, the RNG tends to fuck you over a lot.
It's supposed to get harder and a lot of trainers use fully evolved Pokémon which is a plus I guess.

Had to go through the "Power Plant" (really the Cinnabar Mansion unchanged) to get "A Gym Pass" (that's the name of the item, article included).

The fifth Gym is led by Blaze, who wields a Nidoqueen/Rapidash/Arcanine/Ninetales, Arcanine at Lv. 60.

There's so little to talk about in this hack that I'm not sure I should finish it, but autism dictates I must, just in case something interesting happens.

We can get to the sixth Gym almost immediately afterward.

The sixth Gym Leader replaces Brock and is named Rocky. As you might guess, he specializes in Dragon-types. He has Dragonair/Gyarados/Dragonair/Aerodactyl/Dragonite, Dragonite being at Lv. 63 and serving no challenge whatsoever due to the "always use super-effective moves even if it's Agility against a Poison-type" coding.

The entire city is flooded, by the way, but it's not like there's anything of interest in it so nothing is done with it.

My rival battles me as usual after having cleared through a lot of Silph's police herself. She has Golbat/Dodrio/Muk/Marowak/Weezing, and like all battles with her she's underwhelming level-wise compared to the average trainer, her Weezing only being at Lv. 50.

The Police Chief has Graveler/Machamp/Nidoking/Poliwrath, and is much more suitable to the curve, Poliwrath being at Lv. 62. I beat him and steal their Master Ball.

The seventh Gym Leader is Hermoine in an identical Sabrina's Gym layout; she has Exeggutor/Hypno/Slowbro/Alakazam, and her Alakazam is only at Lv. 51. I'd say I was supposed to fight her before Brock, but the Police Chief, who you of course have to fight before her, also was ten levels higher.

Snek is Lv. 83 and I have 8 Rare Candies.

We start with Crystal; she uses Venomoth/Poliwrath/Dewgong/Lapras/Gyarados, Gyarados at Lv. 78.

After that, we have Bruno (no name change), with Hypno/Dragonite/Alakazam/Gengar/and tops it with "Poltergost" at Lv. 83. It starts out with a lower HP than maximum similar to Skebutops having more HP than maximum. It also can be hit by Wrap so it's not actually a Ghost-type, though it resists Poison.

So far every Pokémon has increased in level by 1 without exception.

We follow it up with a battle against Oak. He uses Raichu/Venusaur/Blastoise/Charizard/Mewtwo, Mewtwo at Lv. 88. Upon beating him, Oak tells me he doesn't know who the final E4 member is.

I get to the next room and it's my boss, Giovanni. Seeing how the curve was raising really quick I used my eight Rare Candies and got Snek up to Lv. 98, now or never.

Giovanni comes at me hard with Rhydon/Dugtrio/Kangaskhan/Nidoqueen/Nidoking, the king being at Lv. 93.

I beat him and he tells me my rival has beaten the Elite Four as well, and to battle her in the next room to find who will be his heir.

And, unfortunately for me, Snek got KO'd for the first and last time. Weezing ended the battle in Self-Destruct taking us both out. I won since I have a full party of completely unused Pokémon, but since Snek was my only battler it feels almost symbolic that it ended that way.

After the battle, the rival reveals they cheated to get here, and that they can't match up to raising a Pokémon legit. Giovanni comes in, congratulates me, calls our rival a disgrace, and makes it known that Team Rocket reigns supreme with me as his official heir.

We win, but the way the battle ended just feels a bit bittersweet. RIP in peace, Snek, you carried me the whole way. ;_;7

Honestly, TRE doesn't really meet the standards of a good hack. This is the most sporadic curve I've ever seen in a hack. I did a rough abstraction of it in Paint just so I could emphasize how wonky it is.

It's not a bad hack, level curve nonwithstanding, it's just very, very rudimentary without anything special to it. Honestly, it reminds me of a hack I once played a long, long time ago that was literally just Pokémon Red but with the main character replaced by Vegeta, the rival by Goku, Oak by Piccolo, and Lance with Android 17, and the badges replaced by Dragonballs. This does more than that hack of course, featuring a kinda-new region and redoing all the trainer teams, but it's the same type of rudimentary hack that doesn't stand out among the rest of the really basic, forgotten hacks. I'm not sure why it's so popular, it's on the /vr/ list, I'm pretty sure Pomf put it up on Bulbapedia even, but it's no different than any of the really early Gen I ROMhacks. I feel like it should just be lost to time like all the others, honestly.

Well, that ends the list of Gen I hacks. TRE was a waste of time but Maize is definitely something, the rest of the list was Red Battle Factory (which is another great hack but not something to really showcase due to the nature of the hack; look it up, it's fantastic, it's literally the Battle Factory in full in Gen I) and some 151/difficulty hacks and the Full Color hack.

I'll start looking through the Gen II list tomorrow.

Well, looking at one of the Gen II recommendations, I can tell you what I'm NOT playing just looking at it from a glance.

One of the recommendations is Pokémon Pikachu Edition (which is a Crystal hack, not Yellow), and:

>Pichu has 90/130/90/120/100/200 stats for 730 BST

Looking at the maps, some of them are pretty creative redesigns (and I'm curious at why Oak's lab looks like pic related), but there seem to be a lot of complaints about the gameplay and balance so I'll just skip that, especially with the OP Pichu. The hacker said no scripts have been edited either, so it seems to just have changed maps, starter, Pichu being the evolved form of Raichu, and messing with teams, like another TRE. Just bringing this up to give a summary of what it looks like from the outside.

How easy or hard is it to edit the Emerald Frontier?

As in, let's say you add some moves from Gen IV or beyond, or someone makes a way to expand the Pokédex like FireRed has. Could one change the Frontier's rosters to use those new moves or species? Have there been any hacks that do anything like that to the Frontier?

Yeah, I've been getting my share of that lately. Just about every time I've been in a battle where I should be able to take a hit from the opposing pokemon and KO it in the next turn, the hit just happens to be critical and my pokemon faints. It is pretty frustrating because there doesn't seem to be any revival items around at this point, and backtracking to pokemon center takes a while, especially when you have to do that so often.

But yeah, I think I can handle it and the game is good enough to be played, so I guess I'll just see what happens later. The trainers you battle on the roads certainly are stronger than in the actual games, although nothing you could call a challenge

Well I would want to see an XY hack just to fix the game by giving trainers more than two Pokémon. Make the rivals competent, give the Gym Leaders more than three in their rematches, just things like that.

You mean TRE? If you mean the original, yeah, it goes up to the Champion and there seems to be a Cerulean Cave that I'm not going through because it's likely unchanged and there's no point.

If you mean TRE2, it's still in-progress. Seems he's currently adding abilities to the game like XY Naturia is doing to Gen II. He also seemed to be trying to figure out how to fit the Sp. Defense stat in the game, possibly by removing IVs. Some real heavy shit, man.

Alright, moving on. First hack is Pokémon Bronze; I actually played a little of this before and thought it was pretty nice, it's a vanilla fan-region with unchanged gameplay but it mixes things up more than, say, TRE.

Title screen leaves a lot to be desired, though.

You live in Cartridge Town -- "Where many versions of adventure begin." Professor Koa (good name) is going to give you your starter.

We're given the choice between Charmander, Totodile, and Pichu. Totodile is always my go-to in Gen II, but I'll let someone else choose my starter for me. First suggestion with a starter and nickname picks it.

You have to use dive quite a few times, but the dive sprite isn't edited for some reason.

Talking to the NPCs I find out that all of the E4 have some kind of special OHKO moves and one of them even wields a Fakemon made out of pure edge.

The Victory Road is really a different kind of hell. It's split up into three parts.
The first part is almost corridor like and you fight a bunch of Cool Trainers. Then the fun begins; the second part of it is an ice sliding puzzle and if you fall into a hole you have to start at the beginning again. The third part is some kind of maze with invisible walls. If you stock up on repels the whole area probably becomes a lot less frustrating and there are surprisingly few trainers.

At the end your rival challenges you to a battle, but you have to defeat his two friends first. They have four Scrafty and Tyranitar on Lv 67 each and the rival's Pokémon are on Lv 60 - 65, which makes the whole thing kinda ridiculous. But you can't heal between the battles.

I guess before I take on the E4 I'll go grind a bit.

The level spikes seem a bit weird occasionally to me. The regular trainers you face are clearly stronger that the enemy team grunts, and the rival has been a let down until now. The fifth gym leader out leveled me by a wide margin so I decided to take the first ranger mission, and suddenly those grunts were quite strong and well balanced. I almost got into trouble there since I barely had any healing items, and feared that the grunt boss would sweep me, but he wasnt any stronger than the others.

Anyway i just got surf and decided that would be it for today. The midgame seems to be unfavourable for grass types and ive been struggling to find good trainers to train my venusaur against, but maybe it will get better

But I usually cleared out every route on the way and haven't had much problems to maintain a team of five.

Other than the occasional ground/electric type there is indeed not much to do for grass types, only reason I don't use one. You definitely want something against electric types though.

We go across the route to Littlepond -- "A Quiet Getaway," and I actually have to take an underground path to go into Kanto and get a Pokédex from Oak and deliver something back to Koa.

On the way back we meet our rival, who definitely has a better sprite than the main character. She has a Pichu, loses, and runs away having to piss.

I give Koa his item and I'm told to head toward the first Gym.

I mean I'm not a spriter so I don't think I could necessarily do better, and I know the four-color limitation can be a bitch when designing characters, and it's not like it kills the game or anything, but there's just something really off about that sprite.

I beat her and get the Bubblebadge along with Mud-Slap (it's at least justified by Wooper spamming the move). Koa's aide gives me the HM for Cut rather than any egg.

Went through Brown Cave (no relation to the hack from what I can tell), ended up at Russet Town -- "A familiar and discreet setting."

Some punk bumps into me, tells me "BACK THE FUCK OFF?" and leaves without a battle or telling me his name.

I found a Pumbloom and caught it, fuck me I chuckled at its Dex entry. There's definitely some memes but they're more subtle than other hacks at least.

The second Gym Leader, Weedy, uses Grass-types and his sprite is worse than Sandy's. He has Oddish/Bayleef/Hoppip, Bayleef being at Lv. 18. I get the Weedbadge.

There's a destroyed unnamed town you can't enter to the southwest.

In the gate to the town beyond that, I realize that was my rival earlier and I just couldn't tell. This time we do battle.

She uses Scyther/Pikachu/Pidgeotto, Pikachu at Lv. 18.

The following town is Peel City -- "A welcome place for all people" -- and I have to say I really like the design, all the vehicles make it unique.

There's a little garage with oil spills that act as ice, the Game Corner, two Pokémarts (the small one is closed down and the clerk gives you Leftovers), and a Fire-type Gym.

Still no improvement with the sprites. I wonder if there's any artwork of the Gym Leaders since the main character artworks is good despite their sprites.

Bianca has Lv. 23 Flareon and Lv. 24 Arcanine. Flareon uses Sunny Day and ends up balking the shit out of my team as a result, but Arcanine isn't too hard. I like the level curve of this game, it's higher than normal but manageable and if they restrict the evolved Pokémon like Arcanine to Gym Leaders, and it seems the AI knows how to use strategy well like Sunny Day Flareon.

After the battle, Bianca can't find the badge, but another trainer finds it on the floor and I get the Terrabadge and Dig. Another thing I like is that, though the TMs might not make the most sense typewise, at least one Pokémon on the Gym Leader's team uses the move so it's justified.

Glazed has 3/4 but the one thing that made me drop it is that move tutors teach ALL Pokemon their move. Like there's a Spore and Leaf Blade tutor in the third town and ANY Pokemon can learn them. What the fuck.
