Am I the only one who feels that GF removing features whilst adding new ones is a good thing?

Lets be honest, it keeps the franchise fresh when compared to stuff like the guitar hero series, CoD etc. Other developers seem to try and cram in as much as possible until they run out of ideas, and their fans slowly dwindle and get bored.

By withholding features and focusing on newer ones, GF leaves us discussing which games we liked best, which features we loved, etc etc. It keeps us interested in pokemon, and keeps them getting money, and they don't stagnate. Win/win.

What are your thoughts, /vp/?

I understand they take out features that aren't great or are somewhat a niche in that particular region, but taking out features that fans LOVE, eg Battle Froniter, is pure laziness, and putting them back in is blatant cash grabbing. Keep it in forever, slits.

I agree, but there are just some things that shouldn't be taken away.

Trainer customization is one. Also useful things like the dexnav. On any trivial gimmicky shit though, yes I totally agree.

I personally think they should utilize the trainer customization from PBR again on every game from now on (having a new design for each trainer on each new game).

Look at XY - everyone whines about how shit it is, but when ORAS comes out - suddenly XY's good features become apparent. Suddenly everyone wants customization, the expanded dex becomes a good idea, etc etc.

The difference is, GF wanting our money -long term- is beneficial for both us and them. Meanwhile, hacks like activision/EA just want shedloads of cash right now, and couldn't care less about their fans interest in the future without playing the DLC card

Its one of the major reasons I enjoyed X and Y so much and the sole reason I even liked PBR.

When a game portrays everyone communicated together in someway similar to an MMO customization is pretty important.

Game Freak also likes to make theor character designs relatable (as in theres always at least one character in each gen you will be able to relate too) which is why all their characters are so likeable and whh Pikachu is so neutral. Same with how starters always follow the same trend.

I think its a pretty important and major part of their success and transferring it over to the character you play as could only make it better.

Ideally the other trainers you don't pick can appear in the story in some way or form.

You could spin some BS about how following pokemon created some sort of connection, being able to constantly see your pokemon in the overworld. And yeah, it probably did.

But
a. the lack of it didn't stop recent games from selling
And b, the reintroduction of pokemon following you will shoot the hype sky high for the game it's in.

You've got to hand it to them, they're clever. I'm somehow more hyped for 'Z' than I would've been because of customization, -and- I'm getting ORAS anyway.

TL;DR this thread:

It's very hard to explain, but the best metaphor I can think of is like having 'too much of a good thing'. By removing features, GF create potential hype and decrease the chance of the features becoming repetitive and boring. This applies even to customization.

The previous game shouldn't have a feature people liked that isn't in the next else your market ends up being disappointed and lose hope for future installments.

The series should build on its past, not strip away features from previous installments that were great ideas and will never be seen again. It also needs to move a lot fucking faster.

That's not proof of anything. It's Pokemon, for better or worse, no matter how many positive features are removed or the overall quality of the game, they're always going to sell.

This runs on the assumption that they're ever going to bring the mechanic back. Which, based on the list of features that showed up once or twice and then never again, isn't a safe bet at all.

No. Just no. A feature, handled competently, is introduced in one game, and is improved upon in successive games which prevents it from becoming stale and boring. See: Breeding, The transition from Battle Tower to Battle Maison, etc.

GF cutting features with every gen isn't them trying to prevent "Too much of a good thing", it's them lacking the skill/time/effort to implement or improve upon their older work.

Games like CoD and Pokemom have a short life span, DLC and being part of a series increases the life cycle by a little while.

They do it for money, just as Activision coughs out overpriced DLC and a new game every year. You're kidding yourself if you think they care that much about you.

I don't mind having different regions with 'trademark' differences.

For example:
- Having Apricorns be Johto-specific
- Having Contests be extra-important in Hoenn
- Having a giant skyscraper city be a Unova/Kalos thing
- Having visually changing seasons as a Unova thing
- Having Underground passages and mining be Sinnoh only

That is fun and makes things varied and interesting. What I don't like is introducing new game mechanics that positively affect the overall gameplay, and then tossing them aside for the next gen.

For example:
- Battle Frontier postgame material that is scrapped
- Customisable trainers that is scrapped
- Rebattling Gym Leaders being scrapped
- On/Off availability of Berries/Gems/Day and Night

There is a difference between region-specific quirks, and core features that are removed.

Wow, it's like the recent flops of CoD/Guitar hero went way over your heard. That's what happens when companies get lazy - they copypaste the -entire- game and merely improve on it a little.

Nah, what takes skill is starting a new feature from scratch, and leaving your previous accomplishments behind.

That's why I'm not too impressed with the battle maison, but the removal of customization is fine by me.

Now, back to /v/ with you until you can find some arguments of worth. Simply saying 'no' amounts to nothing.

I'm not saying they should copy-paste their games.

I'm saying that a competent developer would be able to improve upon old features so they don't feel like a retread, while putting in brand new features as well. See Smash Bros. for a decent example of what I mean.

This is Pokemon we're talking about, one of the biggest multimedia franchises in the world. After ten years and over a dozen mainline games, I feel we should be able to expect them to improve on older features and be able to still deliver fresh, new ones.

Yes. People give them more chances. That doesn't mean it is a good idea to remove features. You claim that removing features doesn't hurt sales, but on the opposite you have no support that removing them keep the series alive either.
It's just all around a cheap thing to do. A series that lives on excluding features just to put them back much later will eventually get a shitload of hate for doing so.

Also, why do you insist that they should put minimal effort into creating the games so they can sell. It's like you're cheering for mediocrity. At this point ut just sounds that you're more concerned about pokémon staying alive than actually producing good games.

Continuing on the leaving behind arguement. You can use that the other way as well. What would truly take skill from GF as a designer is to leave pokémon and create a all-new series, but we know they won't do that because they aren't competent enough.

Assuming you're OP. I find your hypocrisy admirable. Complaining about people telling you to get out, yet telling others to go back to /v/.

Some features should really carry across but don't. I do believe this is in part due to GameFreak's development cycle where they start developing game x very early on, normally before game y has been released, then we all wonder why game x didn't have the feature game y had.

It shouldn't happen in general though. When are we going to return to Hoenn after OR/AS? Probably never. That means if Pokemon following you returns, you'll never get to experience that in Hoenn in your life.

I understand not all features can be ported, however. I loved PR videos, but the whole point of those was to play off the fact that Kalos and Lumiose City in particular was all about glitz and glamour and being larger-than-life in a very French theatrical way, I wouldn't expect to see it in Hoenn.

I do think Pokemon following you, customization and a number of others should really have been mainstays a long time ago. I don't think you really lose anything by including them.

I don't pull the 'LOL GF ARE JEWS' card ever but if you look at the financial side of things, Black and White didn't really sell very well at all comparatively and they were original series games, OR/AS is already doing incredibly well and they're remakes, something that people consider the epitome of 'Jewing out'. I think at this point we're all suckers enough for Pokemon that including some of the aforementioned features wouldn't hurt them financially in the future.

Taking away certain things that were unique to the region I don't have a problem with, its one of those things that keeps them slightly different to each other besides the maps designs like the urban feel of Unova or the northern feel of Sinnoh. Taking away things like post game content or rematches is a completely different matter though, those are things that are wanted in almost all games to stop them going stale after you beat the elite 4 besides battling online. Customization being thrown out though I feel was one of the biggest blunders, not because of being into dress up but it gave the playable characters more variety and when you did battle online, it felt like you weren't battling your literal clone for once and felt more natural in the maison multi battles.
