There's a Pokémon Society at my university and I've made a lot of good friends there.
Just be careful of the weirdos. You can tell from how they're about twenty stone, balding despite being early twenties, and perpetually wear polo shirts and shorts.

I started the one at my university a few years ago. Already having a decent number of friends interested is the best starting point, especially if they know a lot of people.
Make a facebook group, get people talking, then find out about your university's system for booking rooms and if there are systems in place for setting up mailing lists, getting put on your university's society list, freshers fair etc.
Generally try to get a good indication of membership numbers before you apply for anything though, chances are you'll get a lot of interest but people in charge of paperwork will just laugh it off if you can't prove it.

Personally I'd definitely have the latter. There's not much value in the former since it's sort of a shallow look on the series with not much room to expand. I've said my favorite is espeon or something 30 times now, and there's likely one person who knows how to actually play the game who beats everyone all the time so if we were all casuals, we wouldn't really want to battle with them. Random trading is always dumb since unless you're looking for something specific, you can't really get much from the other guy or anything. Then at that point there isn't much else to go off of as a community. What else would you even do unless you were like specifically a cosplay/art community for Pokemon or you're a bunch of furries?

Usually mostly landwhales and fujoshi, but occasionally you can find a decent looking annoying "otaku" or even rarer, actual asian chick who likes anime.

Animu club members and vidya are somewhat interchangable as well. Most animu club members will have some experience in some form of vidya.
