Just got ORAS without X or Y, is there any downside to Mega Evolution? Why wouldn't I just do it every battle?

Basically you'd only wait to Mega if you want to use your ability. For example, Sharpedo can Protect for a turn before Mega Evolving to get +1 Speed from Speed Boost, then Mega Evolve on the next turn. This prevents it from being outsped before getting to +1, because the game applies your normal form Speed on the first turn you Mega, not the Mega's Speed.

In-game, you may use it every battle with zero drawbacks.

In competitive though is where things get interesting: you just get one mega slot and you must play it synergetically with the rest of your team.
