Domestic products in Japan are expensive, and it's usually cheaper for them to import. Since all the languages are in the games, why region locked the hardware so they're forced to buy domestic.

I live in Korea and I'll be in Japan soon. I actually like these new Gamestop code event mon. The last few years I missed out on Meloetta and the Shiny Shinnoh Dragons because they were instore wifi events. With these new ones I can just hop on ebay and buy a code from someone who's scalping them for less than 5 bucks. Sure that shit sucks for the people who drive around to gamestops and can't get a code but I works fine for me.

Just give in and go digital. >>21935623 here and living in Korea I just gave up and trying to do physical with high shipping and customs fees. Went full digital and never looked back. Now I've got a 32GB SD card filled to the brim with shit, it's great for traveling anyways. I'm just extra careful about where I take my 3DS since I'm well aware of the dangers of all digital.
