I wish I could say it's Nintendo as a whole but the second Colosseum was handed to someone other than Gamefreak, it felt like I was playing Red and Blue again. Something new and crazy that I'd never known I wanted before.

Meh, they found a formula that works. Nothing wrong with it. Besides, it's an extremely general formula so you can do a lot with it, which is why each game feels mostly fresh despite having the same fundamental structure.

Because each release improves upon the formula iteratively so fans that know a shitton about the games, about the meta and all that, get a nice expansion to something they already love and dedicated time to each year. It's the same model as a trading card game.

You people are as annoying as the actual /v/ shitposters.

Anyway, I don't have a problem with the general formula, that's just what franchises do. What I do wish is that they'd build up the series over time instead of introducing shit and then removing it over and over.

Just to pick a different series, the Phantasy Star Universe series experimented with how to get Photon Arts right, with a horribly annoying grindy system in the original PSU and lack of the timed button presses from PSO so you just button mashed attack all the time. Then by the time they got to Phantasy Star Portable 2 it felt like they created this perfect balance between the two.

Imagine if instead of removing contests after gen IV, they tried to build on them until eventually it became a metagame of its own. Would've been great, IMO. I mean, it's not like balance is a particularly big concern in Pokemon so I don't buy that they removed it because it would be difficult to balance or some shit.

Then there's the small things like following Pokemon, customization, or Pokeathlon. I mean, I don't really care that much that they were removed, but why remove them at all? Why not at least copy-paste the exact same system into the next game and continue to build up the features?

This pisses me off. Contests were such an amazing idea, and they could have done so much with the system. Instead, they just cut it out completely.

Gamefreak doesn't understand how to make amazing games, they understand how to make the same good game over and over and how to add a small gimmick to it to make it sell.

Watch, next game/ gen Super Secret Bases will be gone with nothing similar to replace them with, and Contests won't be mentioned ever again. Hope you enjoyed Hoenn, guys, because none of the great stuff from there is ever coming back!
