I was super poor in my childhood as well, but then when my mom got a new job that paid better than her old one, she got me both a GameCube and a DS Lite that Christmas. I was pretty floored. Still makes me smile just thinking about it.

I couldn't afford pokemon because poorfag, but my friend came around and told me he got pokemon red for $5. Obviously I lost my shit and called bs, but he told me the local video store (that used to let you rent games, consoles, etc, but also sold) was selling pokemon for cheap because a shipment got water damaged.

So I got $5 off mum after telling her about this supposedly fantastic opportunity and ran across town to get there. Every kid in town was onto this but I managed to score pokemon blue because all the kids wanted red due to charizard love.

Best fucking day of my life. I've still got the cartridge and it still works. Great times. I was a little sad I didn't get red, but fuck I still loved that game.

I remember my family visiting my Aunt and Uncle and cousins in Sydney one Christmas, pretty sure it was the Christmas my bro got Crystal (I think I'd had Gold a while then? Because I distinctly remember him accidentally resetting it on me and me getting upset).
