The Hoenn circlejerking seemed to start around the beginning of gen 5. Before that they were always just met with "lol trumpets" whenever anyone tried to claim it was their favorite game. It's similar to how Sinnoh has suddenly amassed a followed lately.

The Hoennfags were a very small minority and couldn't discuss the game without being bombarded with Hoenn and underage jokes. Gen 5 was when the kids who grew up with RS were hitting the 18-24 bracket, so there was a very noticeable influx of them. Now we're starting to see the first signs of the Sinnohbabies era.

AS is ironically my new favorite and the first Pokemon game I've beaten since I was a young child, and I have grown a new appreciation for Gen 3 because of it
