How the fuck do I even get started on competitive Pokemon playing?

I'm a fucking casual, but a casual who's been playing for 13 years alas. I know what I'm doing most of the time, but I have no clue how to do all the IV/EV/Breeding/Ability/Nature crap. Don't you have to be a top-level autist to manage all that?

If you genuinely can't be bothered to hatch penta/hexaperfect Pokemon, then just aim for Pokemon with 3/4 perfect IVs in the most relevant stats.

no just look up how to destiny knot and get your self a good ditto.
the EV training is easy with hords or the super trainer just use youtube.
natures is easy just wiki that.

But what about putting together a team? What moves to use on which mons, and so on?

That's up to you to decide. Try to build a team of Pokemon that cover each others' weaknesses (http://www.teammagma.net/teambuilder/), then use a site like Smogon or Serebii to see what common movesets and EV spreads are used. Then once you start battling, you'll be able to see what Pokemon you have a hard time beating. So you then adjust your team/movesets so that you can counter them.
