Honest question, Omega Ruby is my first Pokemon game since long time.

It's generally believed you should never pick grass type starter, but I absolutely hate Mudkip and Torchic.

Will I have troubles finishing the game if I pick the grass starter? Will I have problems with finding something capable of swimming? I understand Hoenn has tons of water. I am talking just about finishing the game/beating elite 4, not competitive.

No. Unless you play the game by bashing your head against the 3DS, you should be able to complete the game with absolutely anything.

It's fetus-easy. In fact, you might still be able to beat it by just bashing your head against the 3DS, now that I think about it...

Also Grass starters are usually safe bets, minus Chikorita and Snivy.

All 3 starters are good for the in game story. Sceptile gets majorly improved by it's Mega, and you get the Mega stone relatively early as well.

You are going to have a huge selection of Water Pokemon to be your Surf mon, so don't worry.

Shedinja is really fun, but you'll have to be careful with it. Lots of stuff in Hoenn has rock or dark attacks that will handle it like nothing, and it's attacks are good but its stats are only passable. Worth it if you can get your head around using it, though.

I had the Linoone mostly for Pickup. I had some real fun when it was a Zigzagoon - I used Sand Attack and Baby-Doll-Eyes to get Nosepass to a level where i could kill it with my Beautifly. Gyarados was my Waterfall-Dive-er, as well as my backup Mega. i used Latios up until i caught Groudon.
