Why didn't Spanish and Italians ever translate pokemon names?
I knew that Scandis and Dutch were hopelessly culturally submissive to English language, but I expected better from Latins.
Are Germany and France the last culturally alpha countries in Europe?

I study languages, literature and stuff, and one of the first things you realise is that most languages are rich, unlike some people think. Even old ones, they still have a lot of words which can describe very specific things, so finding names for Pokemon is very easy.

But I think the problem is the way they sound is not really interesting, or that they simply sound stupid. It may be because of the culture, the way of life. Spanish and Italian culture differ quite a lot from England and Germany when it comes to small things, and although it sounds funny, those small things change the way how a language is spoken and how things like specific Pokemon names sound.

Well if it had been like that from the start I wouldn't have minded.
But now I only use the English names because those are the most universal ones, even though English is not my main language. It even makes the names sound a bit more exotic than just being plain puns in my native language. Granted I do understand the English ones but it still feels more like a name to me.

Pokémon no está a salvo. A los juegos los LLENAN de jerga local (p.e. "Entrenador Guay"), sin mostrar ningún tipo de consideración por la lengua latina. Y es por eso que celebro tanto el hecho de que, por ejemplo, Starcraft II tenga una traducción latinoamericana y una española.
Antes que jugar el juego con una traducción que detesto, prefiero jugarla en inglés.
Aunque, honestamente, nombres en español para Pokemones no estarían tan mal, y se prestarían para bastantes juegos de palabras. Por ejemplo "Psicopato", "Destrortuga", o muchas otras. Fíjense por ejemplo en los nombres de los monstruos de Mother 3 en la versión en español, a algo así me refiero.

The beta translation names for spanish pokemon already exist and were leaked a few years ago. They were cancelled because the Spanish dub already used the English names before the games were sold.

Como español tengo que decir que cosas como "Entrenador guay" y demás "jerga local" suenan aquí igual de retrasados, como si un adulto quisiera usar jerga de los jóvenes y fallara miserablmente. Dicho esto, concuerdo perfectamente contigo y creo que que haya traducciones en español de españa y en español latino sería muy beneficioso, pero claro, con GameFreak hemos topado.

En cuanto a si traducir los nombres, no lo tengo tan claro. Por un lado me gustaría que estuvieran en mi lengua, pero como han dicho a veces el que esté en otra lengua evita que te des cuenta de lo tontos que son algunos nombres, y no creo que se esforzaran en buscar un nombre decente a más de 700 criuaturas.

I'd like it if the Italian games had the Pokémon names translated too, but I'm sure I'm one of the few, since there's a lot of fans that complain about the move and abilities' names.
And it's probably because they already dubbed the anime before translating the games. In fact in the anime they still called "Biancavilla" Pallet Town and most of the move names were totally different because they translated them literally or in a different way.

certainly true, but considering we got majorly buttfucked by latins twice and germanics only once (vikings left only small linguistic vestiges) that pie chart makes perfect sense. then again, i'm not even sure how much influence the romans had, if anyone could bring up some examples of old english before the norman conquest that'd be great. if it wasn't so great, i'd say the latin influence is so strong because it was the most recent, and there were no subsequent outside conquests of britain

Pretty much none, Romans left before Anglo-Saxons even arrived.
Most of the "Romance" vocabulary in English language comes from the French who "ruled" over England from 1066 to 1485.
This is why French and Latin are separated on the chart, despite French being a Latin language.
The French part comprise words transmitted directly from French language and the Latin part words transmitted directly from Latin.
The Latin part has almost no words dating from Roman rule, it's mostly words transmitted to English when Latin was the Lingua France during Middle Ages or more recently through scientific names or other bullshits.
