Here, the whip hurts even more. Taxes turn any game at a incredibly pricey thing, sometimes even 4 to 5 times the original price and the cultural gap helps it too. Games are forcily ruled as a thing for kids and any parent, if not really open minded, will see his kid as a failure for playing it. The media still make use of the "skinny guy with a face like a pimple volcano, glasses and ugly teeth, with a green lantern shirt, playing atari" when they're rarely portrayed in anything. They'll try to make the guy like a nice guy but it is terribly bad because they will always try to give the message of "hey, even if he's ugly, bizarre, and a manchild, he's a person too. We gotta accept him." And even the guy in the wheelchair will be more accepted than him.
Try to imagine something like... A guy playing a 3DS in a neighborhood of the guetto, close to a group of thugs smoking crack. It it how it looks like in a big part of the country. At the other, all the whites are something like jocks. Not the "social" jocks. The dumb ones. Imagine you playing anything near jocks.
There are no gaming stores or anything at my city, by the way, and you have to travel 2 hours to the next city, go to a shopping mall and see a brand new Nintendo DS at a dusty corner of a shop, with a handfull of peppa pig and ben 10 games.
At a not so bad spot, a playstation 3 for only something around 800 dollars, with a God of War game close to it.
I wish I was making this shit up.
