The only people who don't know they exist are the little kids who don't have Internet, just like how it was for Mew (for a while), and Celebi. Hell, I didn't even know anyone who knew about Jirachi and Deoxys until the movies, ut of course other people knew about them three days after R/S came out.

I would say the main time when "everyone" knew about all the hidden stuff in the game was when Diamond and Pearl came out.
