Black and White 2 was about the source of true power, which was followed up in X/Y with the Mega Evolution stuff and the ancient weapon.
ORAS combined the these. Magma fights for scientific advancement (truth), while Aqua wants to return to nature (ideals), and they also looking to unlock the power of Mega Evolution and Primal Reversion.
Since they seem to be caring more about story recently, I assume this theming will continue, but I'm not sure where you could go with this.
