I never said it was the best story.
Sinnoh or Kalos had that, for me.
But it was better than "Wuh buh we want our boss, we can't do anything without our boss, let's wreak havoc trying to get our boss back, oh no you beat us before the final two gyms, we'll just back off and not appear for the rest of the game or your entire fucking tour through Kanto except for one straggler who didn't get the memo."
I absolutely loved GSC, and even HGSS, but you can't deny that the storyline was kind of garbage and heavily dependent upon its status as a a sequel to the originals.
