Graphics at least sprite-wise reached their apex in Gen 3, after that they just increased in size because of the switch to the DS.

Same reason when I make a sketch, it often looks better to me than the lineart.
When something has less detail and a lower resolution, your brain fills in the gaps. The gen 2 sprites only look good to you because of that.

The closest we got in Gen 5 was different animations in B/W and B2/W2, which sucked.
Remakes were a bit lazy with having new sprites for every Pokemon too. For example, FR/LG only had new sprites for almost all Kanto and Johto Pokemon, but none for Hoenn.

No it really didn't. It lacks a ton of features. Including the physical special split. It's graphics are outdated. It lacks pokemon. It has terrible level scaling. Kanto feels like its tacked on, and Johto doesn't feel large enough to be its own region. The games got a lot of problems, and it really hasn't aged better than any others.

Consistency. They all pretty much face the same way or are seen from the same angle.

Gen 1 was quite inconstant at times. For Example Magmar, Kabuto, and Yellow's Blastoise looked like it was a top down camera with the pokemon looking upward.

Or That Zapdos for example you can see most of its back but NONE of its belly.
