Honestly, Game Freak isn't all that predictable. Nothing would surprise me.

Nobody expected HGSS to be after Platinum.
Nobody expected Black and White 2 with no Grey.
Nobody expected the sweeping story changes in ORAS.

Who knows? Maybe Kanto's next.

The previous remakes had been before Emerald, and the remakes weren't necessary, since you could already catch all the Johto Pokemon in Gen 3 and transfer them to DPPt.

Kanto is the worst region yet it's been in more games than any other. The ONLY thing that could justify returning there is if the story and characters are vastly improved and even then it might not be worth it.

a. they overhaul Kanto and give it the Mauville treatment

c. expanded regional dex

Well I'd stop if they weren't so good at them. FRLG was better than RS, HGSS was better than DPPt, and ORAS is better than XY. If anything, I should stop buying the original games, and just wait for the remakes.

Considering we got Sylveon in the same Gen as Megas debuted, I'd say we'll be getting normal evos in the future.

The only reason to do a gen 1 remake would be for the 20th anniversary. Otherwise, they'll do a gen4 remake next gen if there's interest in it like with johto and hoenn. (Then again, based on that it wouldn't be too unlikely to get another gen1 remake.)
I really don't want a Kanto remake unless they make various improvements and changes to the region. It's been featured in 11 games spanning 4 generations. Unless it's something different we really don't need to re-visit it again.

GBA compatibility was being phased out when HGSS were released and the only reason why they still had Pal Park available is because the games were built off DPPt. They were certainly more necessary than ORAS are since DS compatibility isn't being phased out at any point during this generation.

Maybe I worded that poorly, but what I meant was that HGSS were still made as a regular DS game (which assumes either phat or lite) which were compatible with GBA.
Also, if you look at DS sales, the phat/lite together sold way more than the DSi/XL. (Actually, the lite alone sold better than the other DS models combined.) That means most users with a DS would have GBA compatibility. Just because the DSi came out and removed the GBA slot doesn't mean that every DS owner was unable to use it.
This is a pointless. HGSS had Pal Park and even improved it by removing limitations. We're all happy for it.

They could have just made all the Johto Pokemon catchable in Platinum or Black and White.

The same is true of the remakes in Gen 3 and 6.
