I don't dislike the friendly rivals. Barry's actually one of the better rivals in that his fights are the best, Cheren's cool, Hugh is cool, Wally gets better.

All those rivals are either your childhood friends or there's a reason for why they grow to like you quickly. In X and Y, they just meet you for the first time, and we're supposed to believe they just become these lovey-dovey best friends within seconds for no reason. They have no reason to love and idolize me.

And the problem I personally have with the rivals is that there needs to be more variety. Gen 2 and its remakes were the last time we had a dick rival.I want a dick rival just to add variety.

Plus he wasn't afraid to be competitive, he wasn't crapping sunshine and rainbows all the time, he felt like a true rival. Fool that I am, I held out hope that just MAYBE Serena was going to do a heel turn and join Team Flare in the later parts of the game, lured by the promise of a Mega Bracelet of her own and tired and angry of constantly losing to the new kid after being raised from birth to be a pokemon trainer.

But fuck the others. They were all supposed to have goals but none of them ever did anything. Trevor and Tierno were useless. Trevor should have actually been able to collect more pokemon than you if you didn't stay on it. Tierno should have done anything aside from being a useless fat dancing fuck. And Calem/Serena should have turned evil and joined Team Flare to get their own Mega Bracelet, it would have made them interesting at least.

I was wished GF actually supported the message they send across to the audience in their games, but it's all lies. Pokemon promotes the importance of close relationships with human trainers and their Pokemon. However, the game mechanics themselves doesn't support it with eugenics playing a large factor in creating the best Pokemon, because perfect IVs, Hidden Abilities, Egg moves and Natures are all inherited stats that trainers need to breed for. I have probably released more Pokemon than I caught because the majority I breed them are worthless in a competitive scene.

I get why since he didn't feel like a rival, but lets face it and say X/Y easily trumps on that. What I liked about the guy was that he had a different set goal to "I wanna get stronger just because" in he wanted to do something about team plasma cause they did him wrong, most other rivals didn't do shit when an enemy organisation was attacking their region save for like Barry who was second most notable. He knew you wanted to beat the league and obviously you knew he wanted to beat plasma to get what was his, your relationship was 'i'll scratch your back if you scratch mine' and when you battled each other, felt more like training than battling to see whos the top dog. Also unlike the other friendly 'rivals', he wasn't a pussy who cowered to people.

Fuck, gen 1 protag had to sleep at caves and abandoned houses and never gave a fuck. Why? Because he had pokémon at his side. His true family and friends. They had bonds like no other and that's why he turned into greatest of all. It was common fact that world was a harsh place and carnivore overpowered monsters were even in the grass next to you. Pokémon trainers were the few that had the guts and courage to overcome this hard world.

Fuck, in XY all the hype was cute with the ridiculous scene of "happy friends catching flowers at forest". Every city had a hotel. All was happy and clear. Everyone could venture the world. I never got the real feeling of and adventure because I was never alone.

Earlier generations: "Turistas go home" levels.
Later generations: "The sisterhood of the traveling pants"
