I don't want an asshole rival like Blue, but I also don't want a goody goody shit rival like Calem / Serena.

Barry, for example is kinda good. but he's too impatient

I like Silver's attitude towards the end of the game or post game. Now THAT is a rival. Too bad he uses shitty pokemon.

I'd say Cheren/Blue/Silver/Barry, then Hugh in that order. The rest are shit.

So long as they're a credible threat (which they normally are not) I don't mind the personality. The dick rival and the friend rival both have their good points. I just want to get back to that feeling of having the rival show up and thinking "Oh shit is my team ready".

Having said that, after the friendship overload of BW and XY I'm hoping the next new one will err on the dick side. I wouldn't mind one signing up with the regional villain team for that matter.

We need a new smug rival, not in the sense of plain dickish like Blue and Silver since we've already had that but a rival that's an 'experienced' know it all, claims to know more about battles, abilities and shit that will hold that against you because you're more of a novice trainer at the start rather than just "hue you're weak you just got lucky". When you first get your starter, he doesn't battle you because he claims he could easily beat you and says he'll battle you next time when you've got some experience under your belt.

One that is decently likable, i.e. not annoying or full of themselves for no reason.
Then there should be some kind of development, like you see them get better at battling or change their opinion on something, not "oh you're so awesome, I'm gonna go do something else instead of battling"
