Personally, I don't mind subtler shinies (some like Garchomp and Gengar might be a little TOO subtle). The most important thing for me is that the light part of the body stays light, and the dark part stays dark, at least relative to each other. This is why I consider Krookodile and Greninja to be shit shinies, because they fucked up the contrast of their original palettes. And others, like Breloom, still look all right even if I don't personally care for the actual colors themselves. It's all about the palette as a whole.
