Gen 5 was mostly just a streamlining of Gen 4's mechanics. The battle engine is faster and animated, the weather effects are now alerted passively (something I'm glad returned for XY), and you can visually see what status effect you have by looking at your Pokemon.

Also Hidden Abilities and 3v3 battles.

Gen 5 had the PWT, Dream World, and Join Avenue among other things.

Gen 5 may not have made any huge additions but it is by far the most polished and content packed games out. Besides adding shit in for the sake of novelty isn't always a good thing. Just look at Gen 6 with clusterfucked Megas and Primals. It's only a matter of time now before that hack Masuda introduces EX pokemon, and Hyper Charizard XYZ Ultimate Dragon.

Who cares? It doesn't matter which one made the most improvements, because we live in the future. If I wanted a game with the dark and steel types, held items, happiness, genders, breeding, egg moves, time of day, a female MC, a Battle facility, a post-game, a decent storage system, unique balls, shininess, pokerus, two special stats, bag compartments, registered items, animated sprites, move tutors, online, and a legendary Pokemon plot, I could play almost any game.

Gen 2 is admirable for making these advancements, but later games made even more advancements while keeping all these.

Compared to the other gens, gen 5 added very little. I'd also say that it ended up looking even worse than gen 4 graphically since they tried to mix 2D with 3D and everything just ended up looking pixelated. And since they opted to make an entirely independent pokedex, a lot of the designs felt like carbon copies of previous Pokemon (that's not to say that all the designs were shit, there were a lot of good ones).

Although it did add a few conveniences (auto-repel, reusable TMs), it didn't contribute much to the franchise. I guess the story was better than normal, but who plays Pokemon for the story?

How about this: every gen contributed something.

Gen 1: start of it all, basic mechanics
Gen 2: Day/night, hold items, breeding, genders, dark and steel types added
Gen 3: abilities, modernized IVs and EVs
Gen 4: physical/special split,
Gen 5: hidden abilities, more battle styles
Gen 6: Fairies added, megas, 3D
