Yes it's fine for kids but acknowledging the Battle Frontier and then not using it is essentially ignoring that Pokemon has a demogarphic of high school/college kids (which was bigger than it ever has been with ORAS thanks to nostalgia.)
It's also ironic how much the game puts in little nods to people who have played since the original R/S (even giving you a special message if you transfer a Pokemon all the way from the GBA games) yet they cut out the only difficulty level that would actually appeal to people playing that long.
