personally, I think prehistoric mammals would be a nice change of pace. How about Smilodon?

You could give it Strong Jaw as an ability, but that may make it too similar to Tyrunt and Tyrantrum

its counterpart could be a wooly rhino. Yeah, it'd be another rock/ice type, but you could shore that up with high defensive stats and Fur Coat as an ability.

Since Relicanth is in the image, I'll say Relicanth, but if we're counting true fossils, either Cradily or Aerodactyl.

As for next gen fossils, an algal mat would be cool, since they're the oldest living things that we have fossils of. More dinosaurs would be cool too, like a stegosaurus or a dimetrodon. I like the idea of microscopic stuff too, like diatoms and foramenifera

If they go back to dinosaurs, an oviraptor would be a nice choice.

Give it Barrage and Egg Bomb as a move.

Ability would be "Nurterer", which gives its teammates an eviolite effect, with its Hidden Ability being Parental Bond

Next-gen fossil mons should be based on a Velociraptor as a Rock/Fighting type, and the other based on a Spinosaurus as a Rock/Dragon type.

I always found it wierd that Johto didn't have any native fossils. Cosrola could have been one, it would have made sense type-wise at least.

Call me a Genwunner, but the Gen I fossils are my favorite, Kabutops and Aerodactyl were my favorites as a wee lad.

More recently though, I have found myself to be a closet Cradily fan.

I think anything Rock/Fire would be a neat concept, like the Rock was a piece of dried lava and the pokemon inside kept tue properties of the lava that killed it. Of course Game Freak would make it a big red boudler called "Magmadon" or some shit, but I digress.

Ice/Rock is a great offensive type. No need to beat around the bush, anon, just make it fast and strong. A glass cannon, anon. That's all. Defensive ice types are always shit, especially one with 4x weakness to Fighting and Steel.

Tyrantrum by far. It's one of the only reasons I got into 6th gen after skipping 5th (that and I was too poor to buy a new DS). I fucking love that thing. As soon I started OR I tracked down someone who would trade me a tyrunt that I could breed from. Ended up with a shiny Tyrantrum that was my bro for the whole game.

It's just a shame that it's such a slightly above average pokemon. Pretty monstrous after a dragon dance though.

I read a book in my childhood that claimed that by all understanding, the Troodon was likely the smartest dinosaur to live. Rock/Psychic, anyone?

As for those existing, Aesthetically, I love Aurorus, Archeops, and Kabutops. But Rampardos is the only one I've ever kept in my party for a good duration of time before eventually being replaced by Garchomp.

I love Cradily to death for 2 reasons:

1. As a kid I would find the fossils of the the creature it's based on all around my yard and the surrounding desert, including a fucking huge boulder with hundreds of them embedded in it.

2. It was my first non AR shiny, traded it from some dude I knew in middle school. And by trade I mean stole by bribing his little brother with a Mew because that guy was a cunt.

Bastiodon was an aesthetic dissapointment, and feels incredibly redundant given Aggron. It's the same way I feel about Donphan knowing we're never going to have a tank elephant pokemon of a type combo like Ground/Steel because Donphan already exists
