Does anyone else prefer GSC over HGSS? GSC had sort of a gloomy atmosphere that I thought matched the Johto lore better. HGSS was too bright and colorful for such a dreary and traditional region.

They are both LITERALLY the same game. One has more stuff than the other.

GSC were glorious but even I have to admit, a remake capable of doing all of it and more is better than doing the exact same thing.

GS was a fantastic gameboy game, perhaps a better game for its time than HGSS was for its own time. GS really stood out back in the day. However, following pokemon, battle frontier, online, fixed bugged moves/typing, the physical/special split, and the safari zone make HGSS objectively superior. Nostalgia is the only reason anyone would want to play GS over HGSS.

Gsc are my favourite games in the series, they just have this very special atmospheric feel to it. The soundtrack, the sprites, the overall asthetics are just unique. Yeah hgss have a ton of fancy features over it, but that's not really what adds alot of substance to a game. Gsc does have its flaws, but it's still the gen i can replay over and over.

I never really got how nostalgia per se is a bad thing. Everyone over the age of 18 plays pokemon out of a hugely nostalgic motivation. Preferring a game over a newer game isn't a bad thing unless you make the newer game look bad without justifications (as in genwunners). Rby and gsc will always be the games i enjoy the most in the series. If that's because of nostalgia only, so be it.

HGSS is better in everything bar those two elements.

Overall they are both great games, HGSS being slightly better because it feels complete, and Kanto is actually good.

I didn't play a single Pokémon game between Silver and SoulSilver and I thought SoulSilver captured the atmosphere perfectly.

GSC wasn't gloomy at all. In fact, it was extremely bright and colorful, at least after having played the Gen1 games to death.
