Bought a $4 circle pad replacement and manually replaced it and now it's perfectly good (slightly more wiggle room, but no more rubber sheddings from friction).
For people who use it for eggs, simply put something heavy and stable enough on the dpad. I find the lip of my phone (lip from protective case) is just heavy enough to hold the d-pad down.
Also, the circlepad isn't hard to replace, nor is it expensive if you're fine with a plastic replacement (and not the original Nintendo brand replacement).
