I do think the general line of "He's a rival you actually want to beat" is bullshit, though. You can be competitive with people who aren't assholes. A bunch of my friends and I like to play Monopoly, and the games get really heated. I want to win those games. That's because we're competitive, not because we hate each other.

3rd gens rival hardly had any personality in the games

4th gens didn't have much either besides friendship

5th gens was forgettable

6th gen they give you about 10 rivals that all just wanna suck your dick and talk to you all game

I wouldn't say gen 1 and 2's rivals were perfect but they had personality. Blue was an ass and Silver was an evil psychopath. 3rd gen onward its just stereotype friends that might as well not exist.

Brendan/May are quitters that don't even make it to their starters last form in the originals, Wally is some faggot you already forgot about by the time you end up fighting him again, and Serena/Calem have nopersonality and their five mon team at fucking Victory Road don't even have all four moveslots
