Really depends on the kind of math you are doing. 99% of Pokemon (and, honestly, video games in general from the user's perspective) is basic arithmetic, which is to math what a ruler is to architecture.

All right, derivative definition is:
lim{h->0} [f(x) - f(x-h)]/[x - (x-h)]
lim{h->0} [f(x) - f(x-h)]/h
For f(x) = x^3 you got:
lim{h->0} [x^3 - (x-h)^3]/h
Doing some algebra...
lim{h->0} [x^3 - x^3 +3x^2h - 3xh^2 + h^3]/h
lim{h->0} [3x^2h - 3xh^2 + h^3]/h
Since h is never really zero, you can simplify h's like nothing really happened.
lim{h->0} [3x^2 - 3xh + h^2]
Now, act like h is zero.
