So I recently found my old leafgreen cart with my monsters I caught in highschool.

how difficult is it to get these guys to pokemon bank? which games do i need for a complete transfer? has anyone done this?

You need to access Pal Park in Gen4. You can transfer from Gen3 if you stick a GBA cart in the bottom of a DS with the gen4 game inserted at the same time and start the games up, you'll get the transfer option on the menu. Obviously you can only do this with older DS models.

Afterwards go to Pal Park in the Gen4 game, Pal Park is only accessible towards the end of the game, in the case of DPP, after the credits.

Gen 5 has a similar thing but you need two systems. There is a building in the endgame that lets you transfer from Gen4. For this one you need 2 DSes, it's done wirelessly with one game in each DS. After that use Pokemon Bank to take the pokes from the Gen5 game.

okay so I picked up a dslite for $10 today for the transfer.. have a 3ds for the transfer to BW/2

I've been reading online that leafgreen has a post-game island quest that you have to beat before you can transfer monsters?

also will soulsilver work instead of platinum?

You need any gen4 game, Soul Silver is fine but you need to get up to Pal Park in Fuchsia City.

Iirc the endgame quest in FRLG is for trading between those games and RSE and not needed for the transfer to gen4.

I was thinking maybe S/R for shiny legendary pokes also

Not so much in terms of abilities but some of the legendaries are worth taking over, the birds for example, due to their rarity in current gen. VGC rules only allow Pokemon caught or hatched in gen6 anyway so I personally never gave much thought to it, though ORAS has a secret base poster you can obtain if you take a Pokemon from the original R/S to the new games. Keep in mind you need complete a Gen5 game too. Full process is

>beat gen4, transfer from gen3 via inserting game in GBA slot and going to pal park
>get national dex in gen5, go to poketransfer lab and have another system with the gen4 system ready for wireless transfer
>insert gen5 game in 3ds and go use Pokemon Mover software
