Not gonna lie.. last year I was alone for the first time on my birthday. I walked into the pokemon center in Y and thought my game crashed. Then the lights flicked on and they started playing happy birthday in the pokemon center with the banner and stuff..

I cried for like 20 minutes. Fucking gamefreak.

It's two entirely different things.
In most fiction there is an act that is meant to portray real events and I don't see any problem with being touched by it.
It's something different if a fictious character tells something to the audience to make them feel special, but tells it to all of them . If you're moved by it despite knowing this you're a true beta.

If I for some reason did not get any messages from friends and family I would be a little depressed. Seeing a 'happy birthday' from a pre-programmed game would probably just add salt to the wound. You should never replace real feelings by fake ones from a game.

Yeah sure some only does it because why not. But if you don't have anyone that actually does it because they legitimately wants to wish you a happy birthday I feel sorry for you. It doesn't matter if they didn't know it was your birthday until they saw it on facebook, as long as they mean what they're posting.

You can probably replace the GF congratulation by the 50+ gratulations you get on your fb page from people you don't know that well. But are those gratulations the ones you care about?
