The characters were terrible except Lysandre. The routes were too small because Gamefreak wasn't competent at handling the new 3D graphics/perspective. I had to wrestle with the camera continuously. Lumiose city in particular is a disaster. At least the game provides you with cabs.
I never played the original third gen games and therefore had no nostalgia to either ride on or inhibit my opinion of ORAS. In the end, I found that I liked ORAS' world, characters and story a lot better. Secret bases, Dexnav, a much vaster pool of legendaries to catch and the ability to fly to routes, among other things, also increased my enjoyment of the game. The post game of ORAS was disappointing but X/Y's was terrible too. Both have little to do really aside from the Maison.
