Platinum. Sinnoh is second best gen imo and my personal favorite - dat atmosphere and music. They were obviously trying to get used to the DS though, you can tell from the lack of typing distribution (hope you chose chimchar if you want fire) and the godawful 'Saving a lot of data' bullshit. Platinum expanded on the lore, altered the storyline more than the others, made lots more pokemon more accessible to make catching em all easier. The gym leaders also didn't have to resort to breaking monotype because all types were plentiful.

Platinum (made the games not a fucking chore) > Emerald (introduction to the legendary trio and solidified the idea of a third game where all exclusives are available) > Crystal (introduction to color ) > Yellow (anime hype cash in)

Also while no remakes are "necessary", these are the ones that did the best work for being remakes

FRLG > HGSS > ORAS

Yellow is not the third version of Generation I.

Crystal was important to test out wireless functionality so that Game Freak could reuse the ideas later, which they did.

You're prolly talking about the Pokémon sprites. The rest looks better in Red and Green, which is why Kanto in Gold and Silver looks the same as in Red and Green instead of Blue or Yellow.

The Sevii Islands added to the Johto lore, and confirmed that Passerby Boy is Giovanni's son and that Archer and Ariana were studying ways to force Pokémon to evolve (the admins you battle there are them).

Red and Green were released in February 1996 (originally scheduled for December 1995).

Blue was released in October 1996 exclusively to CoroCoro subscribers as a version to fix bugs; it was later released to retail in October 1999.

Yellow was released in September 1998, 2 weeks before Red and Blue were released in North America. This was after Game Freak postponed the original release date of Gold and Silver (March 1998), meaning that they wanted to buy time and cash in on the anime's popularity (the anime's first episode was aired in April 1997).

Ishihara has confirmed that he thought that Gold and Silver would be Game Freak's last Pokémon project.

Well I like Platinum as much as the next guy but I'd rather they concentrate on making new games. References to older games or even something like what Johto did with Kanto is great though. Plus there's no problem transferring gen IV mons to gen VI unlike gen I, II and partially III.

I can tell you the least necessary was Yellow.

The rest of them were kinda essential.
Crystal, making everything pretty.Emerald, bring in the post game and making everything pretty. And Platinum which fixed the train wreck which was D/P... also making everything pretty.

Crystal wasn't about making it pretty, even though it did. It was about wireless connectivity and online multiplayer (in Japan). Its Battle Tower was for online multiplayer, it had a limited GTS, it had a sort of Vs. Recorder, it had a rudimentary leaderboard, etc.

Why do people think Crystal was just aesthetic changes? Ignoring the Japanese version doesn't cut it because its features have been copy-pasted onto every core series game afterwards in which Game Freak added wireless and/or online multiplayer.

Red and Blue are the Japanese Red, Green, Blue merged. The source code is from Blue while the version-exclusive, in-game trade, and Game Corner prize Pokémon are from Red and Green. That's why there are two in-game trades where the Pokémon "went and evolved", which is not true; it's a localization error.

At least go for Cho's score then because that's what's going to happen anon simply because they can't use Plat's story for two games and make both legendaries available in both games. Then there's the whole "People won't appriciate the Frontier" Honestly though people didn't appreciate the gen 4 one in the first place because it was such a downgrade thing that they've got in their heads which is only going to get worse as things go on.
It was the same deal with ORAS, just be prepared this time.

No platinum battle tower was excellent. I loved the random pokemon battle section. Where they gave you a choice of 6 pokemon. They had some lulzy pokemon and move sets. Who wants to use the same pokemon every time?

Compare gym leader and E4 teams between RB and Y. The game actually went from piss easy to somewhat challenging.
Also, Yellow had some of the best sprites in history of Pokemon.

Okay, firstly you're describing rentals, not the tower.
Secondly, rentals were in Emerald's too the whole problem people had with the Plat frontier is that it removed the unique and interesting stuff and replaced it with regular old battles.
