Easily my pic for top 5 Pokemon that look stronger than they are. Right from Gen1 you had ONIX on the anime, like massive, squeezing Pikachu. Then it turned out crap in game, but they came out with Steelix, holy crap look at it, it must be so strong.... and still sucks

I remember being 11 years old and showing my mom the new Gold/Silver Pokémon in 1999, one of which was Steelix, and she said, "oh honey, this is just a blatant cash grab by the company that made these games, given the success of the first one, can't you see this is pure unadulterated capitalism at its worst?" and ever since I've harbored deep negative feelings towards iron snake :-(

In terms of design however Base Steelix is a 9, and it's Mega is an 11.

Recover on it's own would've been so many thousand times more useful to Steelix it's unbelievable, but we got the Mega instead.

What angers me most is that M-Sableye got a fuck-huge crystal and got Magic Bounce with it. M-Stellix got several fuck-huge crystals and no Magic Bounce, although it would have desparately needed exactly that....

It only works in a dedicated SandRoom team for Doubles. Brave, Maxed HP and Attack and attack while you can with STAB and Sand Force Boosted Gyro Ball and Earthquake.

Outside of that... Don't work too much. And even then, for Trick Room you're better with MCamerupt or MMawile.

It's a really good physical tank in OU. Pairs well with Tyranitar and Sylveon, who can support it with Wish and Heal Bell.

It beats almost any physical attacker one-on-one (except the ones that it can't hit with Ground / Steel / Rock coverage), but needs support to keep going.

It's not bad at all, it's just a lesser choice than the other Megas, and therefore, badly designed. It really needed something like Regenerator or Shed Skin, something to make it unique and self-sufficient.

I'm not a huge fan of Mega Steelix, mainly the jaw and the blue markings.
