He did actually like the pokemon themselves, but never got into the series, not many people in his town were such a fan of it either. I first made him play B/W which was before bw2 came out, and he did enjoy it, actually. He just played it at a much slower rate and didn't use many different types lol. He then got a 3ds and xy, and didn't like it as much. It's the slow movement and how vanillia it was in terms of story and post game. It was rather unfortunate, that's how he feels for the rest of the games that they're trash after they're finished. He still hasn't finished ORAS, although after that I'm going to try and get him into PMD and HGSS. (typhlosion is his favourite)
So, maybe you can try and get your BF into it with emulators? it's much easier than giving him a cart and he'll be using a PC. It was easier to lure him into the game where I showed him various mechanics and pokemon, and with enough pursuading he quite enjoyed it.
Instead of giving him d/p you should probably give him b/w or HGSS, I think it might get your bf more interested because of the c00l grafix.
