I liked BW2 a lot and didn't hate X/Y, but definitely didn't find it much better than just mediocre.

Honestly, if you played r/s and didn't hate XY, you'll probably like ORAS. They expanded a great deal on the originals, and added some sweet things like Dexnav and Sanic Sharpedo Surfing. Only real disadvantage is no battle frontier

I think it's better than XY, which I thought, too, was mediocre. More postgame than XY (don't expect much else than catching a lot of legendaries) and DexNav is an amazing feature. Too bad it won't return for gen VII.
They're not the best Pokémon games, but sill really enjoyable.
You'll like these two more if you liked the originals or Hoenn, though.

how long is this game? which version is better? also i noticed some sort of actual flying around thing. can you do that anytime or just at certain spots/events?

15-20 hours, I think. DexNav has the potential to expand it by hours because you can catch wild Pokémon with the potential to have a random egg move, at least 3 max IVs and HA.
There isn't a better version, it's just personal tastes. The only thing different are version exclusives (they have the same as the originals + exclusives based on their color, Sawk and Clauncher are for example AS exclusive because they are blue)
And yes, you can soar, but only after a certain point in the game. Can't say when exactly, because I'm not that far yet. On my way to the Weather Institute now. You can use it to catch legendaries and other non-Hoenn-native mons.

I've heard Fantasy Life gets boring after a while.

It sounds fun but I'm so afraid of buyers remorse. I know they make quality games, but I'm scared that I may have grown out of the Pokemon formula.

Dexnav sounds nice though, do you get that early on?

you only soar with lati@s, and you don't need it in your team, you can even trade it and you can still soar, and you get the ability to soar after catching/defeating gro/kyo
