So much this. I was picking apart this guy's team in an OU battle the other day, and he ended up surrendering only after his team was stripped to Skarmory and Chansey. It's ridiculous how they create the skeleton to any team.

I've got a friend running a team of:
Clefable
Conkeldurr
Mandibuzz
Thundurus
Excadrill
Slowbro

He hasn't told me the sets or anything, but I'm trying to construct a team to beat him. So far, Greninja eats his team, so I'm thinking of running a GreNade core.
I'm using Heatran and Latias for my defensive core, but I noticed I was really weak to Garchomp (especially scarf), so I'm thinking of replacing Latias with Clefable.

Thoughts? The last two of my team are Espeon for Magic Bounce as my team doesn't really enjoy status too much, and Scarf Landorus-T for the intimidate switch ins.

Heatran's Lava Plume helps with the burn chance as it lets M-Gallade get an opportunity to come in and set up. Heatran also helps fend off Smogon Bird.

I had never thought of Banded Azu. That's a pretty good idea. I'm thinking of running some kind of wish support with it (maybe Chansey, who can also absorb Thundurus's attacks, but I gotta watch for taunt/superpower/knock off too)

Yeah the ORAS meta is almost unplayable at this point until some bans happen. I mean you have Greninja destroying everything, and as I've said before there's now way too many Megas to try to counter or even check with a team of six. Maybe it'll get better after the next suspect test but it's not fun as it is right now.

Also I've never been as annoyed as Lando-T as I am in the ORAS meta and I'm running an Ice Shard user. Fucking overcentralizing piece of shit.

Well, I want to build a Bromoonguss core team and this is what I got so far:

Physical Wal bro (Scald, Toxic, Psyshock, Slack off)
Mixed Wall Moonguss (Giga-D, Clear Smog, Spore, Foul Play)

Bulky M-Zard X (DD, Roost, Fire Punch, Dragon Claw)
Dragonite (DD, Extremespeed, Dragon Claw//Outrage and EQ/Fire Punch)

I don't know what else to put here, what SR user I could have or which defogger/spinner I need.

Scarf/Specs chandelure can work, reuniclus is only decent on TR teams, excadrill works fantastically well with ttar or hippo but can compound weaknesses

I'm not a huge fan of suicide leads since it's a big gamble and you're killing off part of your team. The standard scarf set works pretty well with Trick + 3 attacks, but if you're set on boosting Luke memento is an option. Personally I prefer the specs set 'cause it hurts like hell coming off of 145 SpA

One of the biggest problems i have with making a team is I don't really know how to actually build one. I try and make it two sweepers, one healer, one tank, one mixed, but that never really works out for me. How do I git gud?

Teambuilding isn't like an RPG where you need a dps, mage, tank, and healer. You pick one or two pokemon and add in more to cover their weaknesses and deal with common threats in the metagame. That doesn't mean you could do some stupid shit like 6 sweepers but it's not mandatory to run one of each class, so long as your team doesn't have glaring faults. This should help give you an idea of how to balance a team and build to hold it together:

There's alot frameworks for successful teams, HO- Hazard Lead, Wall Breaker 1, Wall Breaker 2, Sweeper 1, Sweeper 2, Speed (scarfer) -wold be an example, you can look up shit on smogon, frameworks do work, making your teams predictable though. Other concept would be working around cores, defensive cores that cover each others weaknesses, offensive cores that beat each others switchins, etc, making solid choices to build teams around.

I still need a 6th Pokemon but is this okay for now? This would mainly be my in-game team that I used to play against friends, anons, and randoms.
I think I have some overlap with roles but would like some basic advice. I'm assuming a Dragon type would be helpful in this situation but I'm not that big of a fan for some reason. Maybe Metagross for the final slot? As far as sets go I'd probably just use what Smogon says for the beginning since I have 0 experience with that

as I've said the sand rush set can have rapid spin and doesn't get locked in one move to remove hazards, it's like you want to lose momentum completely

it's not the only way to run it but it's the only way it doesn't suck ass, only the shittiest middle and low ladder teams run scarf excadrill

Have you played alot recently? People still use rotom and lando-t on offense. Considering the two most common pivots are stops to exca you are exaggerating hugely.
Also scarf exca is a great spinner and revenge killer on teams where sand and a fat fighting bait aren't beneficial.

Yeah.
Things like Greninja can't run defensive, so you don't give em the EV spread of a defensive Pokemon.

Smogon is a pretty good place to learn good sets for each Pokemon.

Anyone want to give me a basic OU team setup so that I can learn the mechanics of competitive battling before I learn how to team build. I think my problem with not understanding how to build a team comes from not fully understanding how the meta works.

The problem is that you view showdown as competitive when it's little to do with the game itself.
