I got the impression that Aster was probably her little sister or something. Their parents probably died before Zinnia turned 10, so she wound up raising her little sister like a daughter. Fast forward to about two years before ORAS and Aster probably peeked into a portal somewhere and got eaten by Terrakion. Because Terrakion eats little girls now.
