It's never fully explained, but Mikuru best mentioned it as being something like a picture book or animation strips. Changing one page won't alter the other page, all events are predetermined. When time traveling you're actually moving in a 4 dimensional direction through a 3 dimensional space; look up a video on youtube of how something like this would look like. It's semi confusing, and of course Noizi Ito doesn't have the credentials to seriously bring forth points of theoretical physics with certainty, but it does at least present the issue and pretty much tell the reader "Listen, this is probably too complex for you. It's too complex for me to understand too, but try to meet me halfway" rather than flat out pretending it doesn't exist.
