That's essential how you learn any program without going to school for it, 3D modeling is a little difficult to get into just because it's a little tricky to think in a 3D space while only working on a 2D plane.
Animating is a completely different thing to modeling, but the 3D pokemon models
I assume that's what you want to animate are all rigged which make it easier.
